Michael Squires has worked on D. H. Lawrence and Frieda von Richthofen for five decades. Widely recognized for his editorial and scholarly work, he has published or edited many books on Lawrence. The Pastoral Novel: Studies in George Eliot, Thomas Hardy, and D. H. Lawrence appeared in 1974 from the University of Virginia Press. A series of edited collections followed, some of them with other Lawrentians: D. H. Lawrence’s “Lady” (essays on Lady Chatterley’s Lover, with Dennis Jackson), The Challenge of D. H. Lawrence (with Keith Cushman), and D. H. Lawrence’s Manuscripts (the letters of Frieda Lawrence and Jake Zeitlin).

When the monumental Cambridge Edition of D. H. Lawrence was proposed, in 1975, Michael Squires agreed to edit Lady Chatterley’s Lover, a famous text made difficult by its complicated transmission history. This edition, which provides the only reliable text of the novel, was published in 1993.

Two biographies of Lawrence and Frieda followed, one scholarly, the other popular. Living at the Edge, published by the University of Wisconsin Press in 2002, gives a full account of the couple’s transient life together. A shorter biography, D. H. Lawrence and Frieda: A Portrait of Love and Loyalty, published by Andre Deutsch in 2008, introduced the Lawrences to a new audience of nonspecialist readers. This book, updated and enlarged, has become D. H. Lawrence and Frieda: A Shared Life. It draws on hundreds of newly discovered letters written by Frieda after Lawrence’s death.

With his wife Lynn K. Talbot, Michael is editing a selection of Frieda’s finest letters. Now in progress, it promises to refine and refresh Frieda’s character and to provide the basis for scholars to reassess Lawrence’s biography.

For many years Michael taught at Virginia Tech, became head of the English department, then Cutchins Distinguished Professor, before his retirement. He is now Professor Emeritus of English.

Lynn K. Talbot is Professor of Spanish at Roanoke College in Virginia. Her academic interests have led to numerous articles on contemporary Spanish women writers, the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, and D. H. Lawrence and his wife, Frieda von Richthofen. With Andrew T. Squires, she co-edited essays on the Camino entitled Following the Yellow Arrow: Younger Pilgrims on the Camino, Wingspan Press, 2011. With her husband, Michael Squires, she wrote Living at the Edge. A Biography of D. H. Lawrence and Frieda von Richthofen, University of Wisconsin Press, 2002. For the past 20 years, she has been interested in Frieda von Richthofen and in 2012 published an inventory of the 2,200 Frieda letters that she had located. They will provide the basis of a new edition.
