David Herbert Lawrence was one of the greatest figures in 20th-century English literature. He grew up in Nottingham, where he trained as a teacher. He started his teaching career in Croydon in 1908, and worked there until 1912. After a serious illness, he returned to Nottingham, and two years later eloped to Germany with Frieda Weekley. They returned to England in 2014, got married, and spent much of the duration of the war in Cornwall.
In 1919 the couple left England and travelled extensively throughout Europe, Ceylon, Australia, Mexico and New Mexico. This is reflected in his evocative travel writing.
Lawrence’s health deteriorated and during his last years he spent most of his time in Italy, visiting England only briefly. He died in 1930 at the age of 45.
D.H. Lawrence was one of the most influential writers of the 20th Century, and wrote novels, plays, essays and poems as well as copious letters.

Lawrence’s papers are held in archives at Nottingham University, which is the international centre of Lawrence scholarship. They have catalogues and other resources available online, including a study of his short story, ODOUR OF CHRYSANTHEMUMS.
D.H. Lawrence’s work spans every genre of writing. His fiction includes novels, short stories and novellas, poetry and plays, and his non-fiction includes travel writing, essays, literary criticism, articles, book reviews, and introductions to other authors’ books. Even his letters have been published.

During his life, Lawrence’s work was the victim of censorship, heavy editing and poor typesetting, which often altered the meaning of significant passages, or deleted whole pages. Now all his works have been restored to their original authorship and intent in a major work of scholarship by Cambridge University Press over the last 30 years.
