Paper Lion Author: Bruce Hobson, Mwenye Hadithi

Bruce Hobson’s animal stories are inspired by the traditional African tales once told round the fire by village storytellers.  As a true storyteller himself, he makes them his own, and brings them alive for children and their parents today.  This is why he writes under the name of Mwenye Hadithi, The Storyteller.

Bruce grew up in Nairobi, in a wooden house by a river, surrounded by bush.  Animals were a constant presence and one day he even found a crocodile asleep by the ironing board! We are sad to report that Bruce died in February 2022 He was in the middle of a game of Pickle Ball, a game which he loved, and he was winning, when he collapsed. He was full of fun and new ideas right to the end, and we miss him.

Bruce Hobson, Mwenye Hadithi ▸ Titles

Bruce Hobson collaborated with Adrienne Kennaway on 14 African Animal Tales to share their love of Kenya and its stories. The animals are full of character, and many of the backgrounds are recognisable locations in the local area.

The books have been translated into multiple languages including Xhosa, Zulu, Chinese and Japanese.

In 2025 we reissued 4 of these much-loved classic tales as Dandelion Digital editions.
